C6 Aqua Western U.S. 250 m eMODIS Remote Sensing Phenology Data
Historical remote sensing phenology (RSP) image data and graphics for the conterminous U.S. (CONUS) are made freely available from the USGS EROS Center through this website. Seven data sets are distributed, and they are listed on the upper left side of this page. Due to degradation of the MODIS Terra and Aqua sensors and the expected decommissioning of the MODIS sensors in the near future, eMODIS-based CONUS RSP products will no longer be developed. Starting with 2021 CONUS RSP products, eVIIRS-based RSP data (derived from S-NPP eVIIRS NDVI data) will be developed and available from this website.
Click on the drop down list to the right of the icon for image data (top) or graphics (bottom) and select the year for the RSP data set or graphic. Metadata, providing processing details, are bundled with the image data.
Users can also access these data through Earth Explorer (EE). Note: the MODIS collection number (C5 or C6) can be identified at the end of the EE Entity ID as V01 for C5 and V02 for C6.
We are releasing the 2019 Remote Sensing Phenology metrics with a caution to the user community: we have identified anomalies and have concerns regarding the End of Season Time (EOST) metric, especially within the state of Montana. In parts of the state, the EOST occurs many weeks later than in previous years. The delayed EOST affects several other phenology metrics, i.e., Duration (DUR), End of Season NDVI (EOSN), and Time Integrated NDVI (TIN). We apologize for any inconvenience this causes. Investigation into the root cause of this anomaly is ongoing.
